Women's Rights in Honduras
- In Honduras, abortion is banned under any circumstances, including cases of rape, incest, or if the life of the mother or fetus is in danger.
- The supreme court ruled that the emergency contraceptive pill was a method of early abortion and is therefore illegal. Women could be jailed for up to six years for using it or if doctors prescribe it.
- Honduras has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Central America, and the possible ban on emergency contraception would only lead to more unwanted pregnancies.
- There are no options for women with unwanted pregnancies so women can’t decide if, when and how many children they want. It’s a terrible situation women face in a country where there is no education on women’s productive rights and sex education.
- Feminicide, or killings of women, claims the lives of many victims due to intolerance of women’s defiance to patriarchy in everyday life. Women are also often raped. None of the murderers were sent to jail.
- Women in Honduras are denied the right to own land.
- Women are often not given the same opportunities as men in regard to jobs, education, and status.
- Honduran women continue to risk their lives to defend their rights and demonstrate against the violence and human rights violations that have come to characterize their country since the June 28, 2009 coup d’état.
- Scores of women’s organizations marched under the slogan “Step by Step for National Sovereignty and Autonomy for Women!”.
“Women and feminists in this country are sick of the violence against women and the increase in femicides. We say no more legal indifference, institutionalized misogyny and impunity, and respect for the human, economic, social cultural and sexual rights of everyone.”
